Laser tattoo removal and Roaccutane
Roaccutane or Isotretinoin is currently the standard care for the treatment of severe, scarring cystic acne. The most common adverse effects are a transient worsening of acne (lasting 2–3 weeks), dry lips (cheilitis), dry skin, and a propensity to sunburn easily, due to the skin being more photosensitive.
Roaccutane is a absolute contraindication for any laser treatments including Laser tattoo removal. Unfortunately the Q-switched laser can be ablative on the skin of someone taking roaccutane . Roaccutane increases cell mitosis and may compromise wound healing especially required for tattoo removal.
The patient needs to be off medication for one year prior to commencing treatments.
